MC Industrial Completes $21 Million Dallman Station Upgrade for Springfield, Illinois City Water, Light & Power
MC Industrial one of the nation’s leading industrial contractors recently completed the $21 million Dallman Station Unit 33 Flue Gas Desulphurization Upgrade for Springfield, Illinois City Water, Light & Power. MC Industrial served as general contractor for the project, which will increase Unit 33 SO2 removal efficiency.
The work scope included modifications on two existing scrubber towers and installing two new booster fans and associated foundations. Additional work included: removing, refurbishing and reinstalling six slurry pumps; replacing rubber lined carbon steel slurry piping with fiberglass piping; and removal and replacement of approximately 60,000 square feet of building siding and associated electrical and control upgrades. New structural steel framing was installed inside the existing building to support the new piping system. Additional steel was installed outside around the booster fans to help support the new ductwork and provide access to the maintenance areas associated with the fan.
MC Industrial used Building Information Modeling (BIM) to model the absorber internals, assisting in the pre-planning and coordination of the internal header replacement. Plexiglass tubes were utilized to create a scaled model of the absorber tower. The molded headers were fastened to the inside of the tubes at the elevation and orientation relative to their design locations to get a better understanding of the complicated installation. This was a tremendous benefit to the planning effort and work plan communication.
Black & Veatch served as the owner’s engineer on the project. Other major contractors on the project included Northwest Mechanical of Davenport, Iowa, Schneider Electric of St. Louis, G&L Associates of Des Plaines, Ill., Aetna Coatings of St. Louis, Plocher Construction, Highland Island and Triangle Insulation of Paducah, Ky.
