ST. LOUIS – Today, MC Industrial Inc. (www.mc-industrial.com), an independent McCarthy company, began a 16-day, around-the-clock concrete pour on the first two of 13 slip-formed silos being built at the new $905 million Holcim (US) Inc. cement plant in Ste. Genevieve County, Mo.

It took nearly three hours and 140-yards of concrete to fill the forms for the two 60-foot in diameter by 275-foot high blend silos. As slip forming gets underway, concrete will pour at a rate of 33-yards an hour, 24 hours a day until all 6,015 yards are poured. MC Industrial is using its own forces to build all 13 silos.

The design-build silo project was awarded by Holcim earlier this fall to MC Industrial and joint venture partner T.E. Ibberson, a Minneapolis, Minn.-based design-build contractor and world-wide leader in slip-form technology.

"We are very happy to be working with one of the outstanding contractors in the region and look forward to having a safe and successful relationship during this phase of our project." said Rudy Blum, Holcim’s project manager at the Ste. Genevieve Plant.

In February and March, two 150-foot in diameter by 207-foot high clinker silos, by far the largest in diameter of the 13, will begin. Following these, eight, 275-foot high by 79-foot in diameter inverted cone silos with the capacity to store 260,000 tons of cement, and one, 40-foot in diameter by 207-foot high reject silo will be constructed. In all, MC Industrial will pour and place more than 90,000-cubic-yards of concrete to complete the silos. At peak, the project will employ 340 tradespeople who will work two, 12-hour shifts during the 18 week slip forming schedule. Expected completion is February 2008.

“We’re honored to be part of this ground-breaking project for Holcim,” said Tom Felton, MC Industrial president. “This award represents a huge vote of confidence in our team’s ability to execute this work.”

Holcim’s new plant will feature the largest single clinker production line anywhere in the world. When it comes on line in 2009, the plant will have an annual cement capacity of four million metric tons (12,000 tons per day clinker). The plant is also one of the most environmentally friendly in the United States and the world, with emission limits among the lowest permitted for any cement plant.

ST. LOUIS – MC Industrial, Inc. (www.mc-industrial.com), an independent McCarthy company, has been named prime contractor for a major body shop equipment installation project for Toyota Motor Manufacturing North America in the automaker’s new San Antonio, Texas assembly facility. MC Industrial will self perform installation of welding robots, conveying equipment and all associated electrical and piping components in just seven weeks.

“This project is an exciting opportunity for us,” said Tom Felton, MC Industrial president. “Our ability to self perform much of the work is key to meeting this very challenging schedule. We’re honored to be chosen to install one of Toyota’s largest projects of this type in North America.”
Although the project began on March 1, the first major equipment shipment won’t arrive from Japan until early May with the last shipment arriving at the end of that month.

Tight delivery coordination from the seaport to the job site will ensure just-in-time delivery and minimize the need to handle equipment twice.

Once the containers arrive at the assembly plant, MC Industrial crews will unload equipment from up to 100 containers each week before they can perform installation. When the equipment is in place and at the “power on” stage, Toyota will perform testing before beginning to build truck bodies for the Tundra line of pickup trucks.
